BYRC (pronounced “Byrts”) is a name with a story as fluid as the things I try to bring into the world. It comes from my younger son, who once invented a monster called Byrc — a creature that wasn’t purely good or bad, but whatever he needed it to be in the moment. A shapeshifter, an emotional container for everything he loved, feared, or couldn’t yet name.
I borrowed BYRC to hold what moves me, and what I want to turn into something tangible. What started as a publishing house is becoming something a little bigger: publisher and media in one, because photobooks are not just something I make, but a culture I see myself part of — talking to the people who make them, reading them, thinking out loud about what they mean.
BYRC is small, independent as hell, and curious about everything. BYRC don’t have much to lose, which is its own kind of freedom — the freedom to ask questions, to get things wrong, to try to find our footing in a world as unstable and shapeshifting as the photobook world itself.
BYRC is a space for what I care about, even the messy, complicated parts of it. Welcome to my world.
I’m Eugenia Ignatova — a photo artist, photobook designer, and the founder of BYRC
